“As for the effect of guided reading, I personally care more about what is internalised than what can be immediately quantified. The first guided reading lesson we joined was War Horse last year. To be honest, I originally bought the course for myself, because I loved the book. At the time, my child had only just begun reading chapter books, and in both age and vocabulary he was nowhere near the suggested level for War Horse, which I remember was said to be suitable for children aged ten and above. But then something remarkable happened. While I was listening to Mr Moore’s guided reading of War Horse, my child sat quietly beside me, completely absorbed. At one point I left to take an urgent phone call, and when I came back I found that he had turned off the speaker, put on headphones, and was listening on his own. From that point onward, the War Horse guided reading course belonged entirely to him — I never got to listen again. I too wondered how much such a young child could really understand. But for a child that young, to keep asking what exactly he had learned, or which new words he had acquired, seemed beside the point. So I stopped asking those questions. I asked only: ‘Did you enjoy it? Would you like to keep listening?’ And the answer was yes. So after that, we joined every season.”
